Building Billie: Week 2

Where We Are

Last week, I shared how we launched the Billie landing page—and the response was immediate. The waitlist started growing quickly, all organic, which told me one thing:

This is a real problem.

Now, we’re shifting from early traction to building the foundation for what Billie will become—an elite, trusted platform people can rely on to understand and manage their legal background.

And behind the scenes, those early signals are already opening doors—conversations are starting with experienced operators, legal partners, and potential investors who see the same opportunity we do.

Here’s where we are:

We’re at 136 users on the waitlist—and still growing organically. No paid ads. Just people who understand the problem.

Behind the scenes, we’re building the right team. Conversations are underway for key roles, and we’ll be making announcements soon.

We’re also being intentional about the legal marketplace. If Billie is going to connect users with help, it has to be the right help—trusted, qualified attorneys and service providers across:

  • consumer finance and debt defense

  • immigration

  • expungement and record sealing

  • criminal defense

  • traffic, ticket, and license issues

  • personal injury and civil matters

…and more.

Because the reality is—issues in your background don’t fall neatly into one category, and fixing them often requires specialized, experienced support.

We’ve also launched a new vlog series—“Building Billie: Walks with a Founder”—where I share the journey in real time during my morning hikes. Founder stories, lessons, and behind-the-scenes moments as we build.

And we’re doubling down on content more broadly—because most people don’t realize how much their background check impacts their life until it’s too late.

What I’m Learning

I didn’t realize how much building a company would stretch me.

In the last few weeks alone, I’ve:

  • built a website

  • edited and produced video content

  • formed a company

  • started shaping a product from scratch

But more importantly, I’ve been deep in real user stories.

People being blocked from jobs, housing, and opportunities—not because of who they are today, but because of inaccessible, inaccurate, or misunderstood records.

A man in France who couldn’t get documents to his U.S. employer because of conflicting jursidictional rules.

Someone who quit their job for a new opportunity—only to have their start date paused indefinitely because of a background check issue.

This is how Billie is being built—directly from these experiences.

Why This Matters

Background checks are no longer limited to jobs or housing.

They’re showing up everywhere—employment, housing, financial access, dating, and even potential business relationships. People are running checks on each other in ways that didn’t exist a decade ago.

Platforms are already adapting. Tinder, for example, partnered with Garbo to allow users to run background checks on potential dates.

At the same time, people are switching jobs more frequently than ever—every 2–3 years on average.

That means your background isn’t being checked once or twice in your lifetime anymore.

It’s being checked constantly.

And yet, the system is fragmented, outdated, and often invisible to the people it impacts most.

Most people don’t check their own legal records.

Most people don’t know there’s an issue until it costs them something—a job, an apartment, an opportunity.

When opportunity calls, your record answers.

Billie puts you back in control of what it says.

How Billie Works

Billie is designed to make your legal background as easy to understand and manage as your credit.

It starts with a Billie Scan — a simple scan that pulls together publicly available records tied to you, across courts and agencies.

From there, Billie organizes everything into a clear, easy-to-understand dashboard and generates your Legal Wellness Score — a snapshot of what’s in your background and whether anything may need attention.

If something is flagged, Billie doesn’t just leave you there.

You’ll get:

  • Clear alerts explaining what the issue is and why it matters

  • Important dates so you don’t miss deadlines

  • Billie Tools— guided steps to help you start fixing issues on your own

And if you need help, Billie connects you to a curated legal marketplace—trusted attorneys and service providers who can step in and resolve more complex matters.

The goal is simple:
Know what’s in your background.
Understand it.
Fix it—before it costs you an opportunity.

What’s Next

We’re continuing to grow the waitlist—if you’re here early, you’re ahead of where most people will be.

We’re starting conversations around angel investment and grants to build the strongest possible beta. The feedback on the business plan so far has been incredibly encouraging, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.

And we’re beginning to build the first version of Billie.

If you’re on the waitlist, keep an eye out—early users will be invited to:

  • run their first Billie Scan

  • see their Legal Wellness Score

  • and start understanding what’s actually in their background
